Rooted in Detroit, Featherstone Garden activates local greenspaces, growing food for neighbors and creating natural sanctuaries for learning, the arts, and community.
Our Vision
We envision a city where Detroiters have access to green spaces with sustainable organic food production and beautiful biodiverse gardens. Featherstone transforms vacant land into vibrant ecosystems—living classrooms, outdoor stages and galleries, and community sanctuaries that cultivate creativity, belonging, and care.
History of Featherstone Garden
Featherstone Garden is a non-profit organization on Detroit’s Eastside focused on growing healthy food, creativity, and community connections. Founded in 2018 as a social enterprise, we are a trusted neighborhood hub in MorningSide.
We grow organic produce, herbs, fungi, and flowers; expand healthy food access—with a community fridge planned for 2026—and create welcoming, inclusive spaces for people of all ages to learn, make art, and gather in nature. Our ecological approach includes no-till growing, diverse interplantings, composting, and pollinator conservation to support soil health, biodiversity, and a thriving garden ecosystem.
Since 2018, we have hosted over 100 community events, grown more than 25,000 pounds of organic food for neighbors and local restaurants, and transformed five Detroit sites into biodynamic community gardens.
Core Programs
Fresh Food Access
Growing organic produce, herbs, fungi, and flowers for neighbors and local restaurants; stocking a community fridge; and sharing seedlings with community gardens to increase access to fresh, nutrient-dense food.
Education
Providing hands-on, place-based learning and workshops for all ages in gardening, ecology, nutrition, and the arts, building lifelong skills in environmental stewardship and healthy living.
Arts & Entrepreneurship
Offering regular arts and cultural programming in the garden, including performances, storytelling, and local maker markets that support creative expression and neighborhood economies.
Community Events
Hosting seasonal gatherings, shared meals, and community-building events that strengthen relationships, celebrate neighborhood identity, and foster a sense of belonging.
